Mademoiselle Maria Bashkirtseva died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five, having lived a short but very bright life. She was an unusually gifted girl: sang wonderfully, spoke fluently in several European languages, seriously engaged in painting, was friends with outstanding people of his era - Emile Zola, Guy de Maupassant. Bashkirtseva's paintings are exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, as well as in galleries in Amsterdam, Paris and Nice. From the age of ten, Musya, as Bashkirtseva was called by her relatives, lived in Europe, mainly in Paris. The girl kept her diary entries in French from the age of twelve, and they are a unique psychological document of the formation of personality, and also illustrate the author's bright literary talent. In the diary before the reader appears a very talented, romantic, intelligent, strong, but at the same time vain and willful girl. Bashkirtseva's diary was published posthumously, translated into many European languages, Marina Tsvetaeva dedicated her first poetry collection to Maria Bashkirtseva, and Guy de Maupassant said about Maria: "It was the only rose in my life...".
