Elias Canetti (1905-1994) was an Austrian and British writer and playwright, philosopher and cultural critic, winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature and twice winner of the Franz Kafka Prize.
As a very young man, Elias Canetti witnessed a huge fire when rioting workers set fire to Vienna's Palace of Justice. The coordinated actions of the excited crowd made an indelible impression on Canetti, and he devoted much of his life to studying this amazing phenomenon.
