Well, for starters, it should be said that this is Stephen Fry. For those who have read anything - or everything - from Fry, there's not much more to say about the style and presentation. This book is playful, picturesque, rich in epithets, balaguerish and pedantic in detail. And as always, Fry is in love with what he writes about, he does not slip into clowning and comicizing, although in a subject as textbook as the Greek myths, there is every opportunity to arrange a vulgar shapito. There is neither vulgarity nor shapito in this book. Some will say, "Why do we need a hundred thousand retellings of Greek myths and tales? First, old stories live on in retellings, i.e. they do not become stony and do not turn into dogma. Secondly, Greek mythology is rich in material, which up until the second half of the twentieth century, even the fans of antiquity - painters, sculptors, poets - sometimes caused maidenly bashfulness. Now it is finally time to take the myths of the ancient Greeks in a mature way, with interest and healthily perceive the myths of the ancient Greeks, without bills and averted eyes. And who better than Stephen Fry to do it? Third, Fry doesn't try to interpret the stories he retells at all. And not because he has no opinion about them - he just honestly retells them, and it is left to anthropologists and philosophers to dig into the meanings. Fourth, yes, all of these stories can be found in hundreds of books on ancient Greece. But Fry re-creates a bouquet of them; his book is a kind of ikebana. Flowers, branches, sticks and vases may be looked at individually in the flower store, but mankind still makes and buys bouquets. To read this book, in addition to the obvious entertainment and recreational value, it is worthwhile and for the sake of shaking off the dust from childhood memories of Kuhn and his "Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece", to put in order the family trees of gods and heroes, probably long mixed up in your head, as well as to remember the mythogenic geography of Greece, where what was located, who ran and hid where. Fry's book is a great way to get into ancient Greece. And, at the same time, to be entertained as you dive into Fry's style, amazed, horrified and laughing with him.
