The eminent mathematician and religious philosopher Viktor Nikolaevich Trostnikov (1928–2017), having contributed to the legendary 1978 samizdat almanac "MetroPol," was subjected to repression and was long-term banned from teaching and research.

The book "Thoughts Before Dawn" also brought its author rather scandalous notoriety. Written in 1978, it was published in France by a renowned émigré publishing house in 1980. It can undoubtedly be said that Trostnikov's book follows the traditions of existential and religious philosophy of the Silver Age. What is truth? Is the scientific picture of the world scientific? The questions he once posed to himself demanded answers. Having published more than a dozen scientific books, Trostnikov gradually became increasingly distrustful of the global results of scientific research and the general conclusions drawn by scientists. For him, it became undeniable that modern science had come close to the inevitability of recognizing the existence of God. The book became a chronicle of personal revelation and is addressed to people who feel the need to understand the essence of existence and the meaning of their own lives.
