From the first days of the Great Patriotic War, Moscow began conscripting citizens for the Red Army, and as early as July 2, 1941, conscription for the people's militia began. Tens of thousands of Muscovites of all ages and professions voluntarily reported to recruiting stations with the sole desire to go to the front and fight the enemy. A total of 16 people's militia divisions were formed in Moscow during the summer and fall of 1941. Most of them perished in the October battles of 1941 near Vyazma, having fulfilled their duty to halt the enemy's advance on Moscow at any cost. One of these divisions was the 13th Rostokinsky District People's Militia Division (later reorganized as the 140th Rifle Division). It so happened that the number 13 not only became its serial number, but also seemed to leave a fateful mark on its frontline trajectory: on October 13, 1941, after 13 days of fierce fighting, the division was almost entirely destroyed in the Vyazma pocket.

This book is about mobilization, the volunteer movement, and the formation of the people's militia in Moscow in 1941.
