"Sobakin, Mikhalkov, Voinovich, Danelia, Gorbachev - these are they, the architects of my life. I, of course, have also made my own contribution, namely labor. I wrote twenty volumes, and no one could have done it for me. And yet: literary talent is very hard to discover. A singer's or a painter's talent is easy. If a person sings or paints, it's immediately noticeable. And writing... Everyone can write, literacy has been universal since the thirty-seventh year. I might not have recognized my literary abilities. I would have worked as a singing teacher: vahadili gu-si... And so all my life. My destiny would die in me. I'd walk around nervous and unhappy. But I escaped that fate. I've always done what I'm interested in. That's happiness. I have won my life."
