The memoirs of Major General Paul Emil von Lettow-Forbeck tell of the fighting in German East Africa. The author commanded German troops in the colony during World War I, with only 261 Europeans and 4,680 natives. With these small forces, von Lettow-Forbeck successfully confronted larger enemy units during the war. Despite the lack of aid from Europe, German forces in East Africa remained invincible until the armistice in 1918.
The talented commander left vivid memoirs in which he describes not only the battles and the situation in the African theater of operations, but also his interaction with the local population.
