The heroes of the works of two outstanding writers of the twentieth century, Yevgeny Zamyatin and Andrei Platonov, want to be happy and dream of the future, but what is this future and what is happiness in their view? Both the novel "We" and the story "Kotlovan" present a world of lost illusions, a world in which people forget about the past, do not see the present and live only for the future. But "one cannot expect a bright future tomorrow if everything is destroyed today". The authors of both dystopias warn future generations about the danger of the domination of a totalitarian state, in which the idea of universal happiness is brought to the point of absurdity, and instead of individuals there are faceless "numbers" or many "monotonous faces" and where collectivization of not only farms, but also human personalities takes place.
