Nikolay Aleksandrovich Leykin was a well-known St. Petersburg humorist, journalist, and publisher in his time. "Our People Abroad" is one of Leykin's most famous works. The cheerful story about the travels of merchant Nikolay Ivanovich Ivanov and his wife Glafira Semyonovna, about the funny adventures and all sorts of misunderstandings that happen to the characters in foreign lands, was so popular with readers that Leykin wrote several sequels. "Under the Southern Skies" is the fourth and final part of this cycle. The couple, already seasoned travelers, go to France, to the resort town of Biarritz, where Nikolay Ivanovich becomes a hero of the newspaper chronicles, and Glafira Semyonovna, going out onto the beach in a bathing suit, makes a real splash. Then the heroes go to Madrid, but soon leave Spain: the reason is a Spanish captain, an admirer of Glafira Semyonovna. Leikin humorously portrays his compatriots getting to know foreign history and culture, making many discoveries for themselves, but invariably yearning for Russian tea drinking with a samovar abroad.
