Nikolai Aleksandrovich Leykin was a famous St. Petersburg writer, humorist, journalist, publisher. His popularity was colossal: the poet A. Blok called the end of the XIX century “the era of Alexander III and the writer Leukin”. A. P. Chekhov considered Leikin his “godfather”: since the early 1880s, Leikin published his own magazine – the humorous weekly Oskolki, in which he attracted the young Anton Chekhov to cooperate, revealing his talent.
Ours Abroad is one of Leukin’s most famous works. A merry story about the travels of merchant Nikolai Ivanovich Ivanov and his wife Glafira Semenovna, about amusing adventures and all sorts of misunderstandings that happen to heroes in foreign lands, readers liked so much that Leikin wrote several sequels. As the title of this book suggests, the Ivanovs decided to visit Turkey. On the way to Istanbul, they will visit the “Slavic lands” and spend a few days in Belgrade and Sofia. Readers of Leikin see the world through the eyes of his heroes, and this in many ways naive view notices the characteristic features of national cultures and traditions. The merchant couple are waiting for new meetings, discoveries and real trials.
