Marie Jiang's family immigrated from China to Canada and settled in Vancouver. Here, after her father's suicide, Marie and her mother sort through his papers and gradually become immersed in the astonishing, brutal, and bloody history of the People's Republic of China, from the Civil War and the Cultural Revolution to the events in Tiananmen Square. The fate of three generations of Marie's family becomes inextricably linked with that of another immigrant, Ai Ming. Events from the present and the past overlap, and the work gradually unfolds into a sweeping epic saga about the lives of people thrown into the merciless millstones of great change, monumental achievements, and great hopes.
