"Don't Sleep - Snakes Are All Around! The Life and Language of the Indians of the Amazon Jungle" (2008) is Daniel Everett's account of his life among the Pirahã Indians of the Amazon jungle. The young linguist and missionary traveled to Brazil with his family to translate the Bible into the Pirahã language and convert the Indians to Christianity. The Pirahã do not observe day and night and have no concept of private property. Their language lacks numerals, established color symbols, concepts of "right" and "left," and complex sentences. Interacting with the Pirahã and learning about their way of life, culture, and language completely changed Everett's ideas about science and religion. As a result, he, who had wanted to convert the Indians to faith, lost his own faith and devoted his life to linguistic research.
