Elena Osokina's book is, without exaggeration, an intellectual detective. The Russian icon is the main character of this book - the center of attraction of actions of the authorities, museum workers, traders and buyers. One of the paradoxes of Soviet history is that the creators of the "non-market" planned economy became the founders of the world market for Russian icons. At the turn of 1920-1930 x years of their efforts were collected a huge export icon fund, organized a grandiose advertising campaign - the first Soviet foreign icon exhibition, which in all its splendor presented to the world a new antique goods, as well as established links with the world's antique dealers and held the first sales of icon collections abroad. The search for a currency for industrialization turned into the development of world interest in Russian icons. The book tells the story of museums and people (some of them were treated favorably by fate, others ruthlessly), how the grandiose icon collection of the State Museum Fund was created and liquidated, who and how selected icons for export, how many icons were given for sale by Russian museums (Tretyakovka, Historical, Russian...), whether the sold icons were sold by Russian museums (Tretyakovka, Historical, Russian...).), whether the sold icons were fakes and whether there was a "Stalinist gulag of iconographers", as well as how they tried to sell an icon exhibition in the United States, and the fate that awaited the icons after the sale. The book is written on the vast material collected by the author in the archives of Russia, Europe and the United States.
