Thomas Fuller (1608-1661) was an English historian and church figure. He is still extremely popular among English speakers thanks to his catchphrases, which have become proverbs and idioms, penetrating the flesh of the living language. Thomas Fuller is cited six thousand times in the Oxford Dictionary. His sayings were included in Russian collections of aphorisms, but none of his works have been translated into Russian to this day. The author of such popular books of his time as The History of the Holy War, The Ecclesiastical History of England, and Notable People of England, Thomas Fuller was not an original philosopher, but he was a witty thinker, and a sense of humor is equally inherent in people of all times. Humor, mixed with the realities of such a distant and alien era, casts a special light on it, allowing us to look at the world of the 17th century through the eyes of its inhabitants. "Heavenly and Terrestrial" is one of his most popular books, which has been reprinted many times. It consists of short biographies and sketches of morals, which seem to cover all spheres of the extremely complex life of England. The book opens with a short biographical sketch, which allows us to judge what an extraordinary person Thomas Fuller was and what an amazing time he lived in (the author took an active part in the English Civil War of 1642-1651, which left a special polemical imprint on the book).
