This book is the first monograph devoted to the work of Nikolai Konstantinovich Kalmakov (1873–1955), a visionary artist whose legacy has long been forgotten. A painter, sculptor, theatre designer and book illustrator, Kalmakov was a representative of the second wave of Russian Symbolists. In his canvases, the artist turned to favorite decadent themes – demonic and erotic fantasies – and captured bizarre and ghostly visions, using a rich arsenal of historical and mythological images. With his frank treatment of the themes of sex and death, especially in his theatre sketches and book illustrations (a kind of “laboratory of aesthetic experiment”), this St. Petersburg dandy, the “angel of the abyss”, gave rise to numerous, sometimes intriguing, legends and rumors. Uncompromising and rebellious, Kalmakov left Russia a few months after the October Revolution to settle in France: he shared the bitter fate of many emigrants abandoned in a foreign country that provided them with shelter, but did not caress them or help them gain fame.

The book is intended for a wide range of lovers of Russian art of the 20th century.
