New notes by Hendrik Gruhn from the Amsterdam almshouse

Hendrik Gruhn is 85 years old and one of the residents of an Amsterdam retirement home. Life there would be monotonous and predictable if not for Hendrik and his friends at the SNONEM (Old-But-Not-Dead) club. The club's responsibilities, in addition to solving the various problems its members face, include welcoming newcomers, planning and designing new trips and adventures, and, of course, waging a desperate battle with the administration, represented by the headmistress, Mrs. Stellwagen. How could it be otherwise? How could one, for example, accept a ban on fireworks on New Year's Eve or resist the law prohibiting "baking and cooking in the almshouse rooms," when the club's regulars include former chefs Antoine and Rija? And then, too, Amsterdam's almshouses are starting to close one after another. This book is a true encyclopedia of feelings and emotions – it will make you feel genuinely sad and then laugh uncontrollably, following the adventures of the resourceful, cheerful and extremely charismatic Grun and his friends.
