What the Cabias Sing About. Notes from a Freelance Commentator

Hiding from a dark time in a virtual past, Viktor Shcheben, the author's alter ego—a fictitious, yet thoughtful and active figure—began commenting on "obscure" passages from works of Russian (and other) literature that, for one reason or another, had recently caught my attention: Derzhavin's "Felitsa," "A Hero of Our Time," Gogol's letters and stories, Ilf and Petrov's novels "The Twelve Chairs" and "The Golden Calf," and the neo-romantic poetry and prose of Maxim Gorky, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Eduard Bagritsky, and Yuri Kazakov. At some point, my commentary escaped strict academic control and, drawing me into its orbit, began to swell and develop in an unpredictable, but, I think, intriguing direction. Below, I share the results of this experimental free-floating, Leopold Bloom-esque adventure.
