N. M. Pashayeva's book is dedicated to the tragedy of the Russian movement in Eastern Galicia, now perceived as the epicenter of "Banderaism." For almost the entire 19th century and into the early 20th century, the Rusyns of Galicia viewed themselves as part of a single Russian people living in a territory "from the Carpathians to Kamchatka." They defended and shaped a Russian identity under Austria-Hungary.

The movement was subjected to constant repression as Austria-Hungary prepared for a world war and provided large-scale support to Ukrainian nationalists, forming a Ukrainian proto-state in Eastern Galicia. In 1914, ethnocide escalated into genocide. Russian activists were physically exterminated with the assistance of Ukrainian nationalists in the Austrian concentration camps of Terezin and Thalerhof.

The Russian movement in Galicia was finally suppressed in Western Ukraine when the policy of Soviet Ukrainization began, which was more severe and effective than that carried out under the Austrian government.
