The final part of the Ibis Trilogy (the first two books are The Poppy Sea and The Smoky River). The year is 1839, tensions between China and Britain are rapidly growing. China does not want foreigners to turn it into a giant market for Indian opium. Losing huge profits, the British colonialists start a war. The British-Indian armada is drawn to Canton, China. Among the other ships is the schooner Ibis, with which the destinies of all the characters are connected in one way or another. Among them are the sepoy Kesri Singh, leading a detachment of Indian soldiers; the young sailor Zachary Reid, dreaming of wealth and glory; Shirin Modi, the widow of a Parsi merchant, heading to China to return her husband's lost wealth; former Rajah Nile, trying to find peace in Canton...

The final book of the trilogy will tell what happened to the heroes of "The Poppy Sea" and "The Smoky River". Their dramatic fates unfold against the backdrop of no less dramatic great History, forming a huge and colorful multi-figured canvas.
