Soviet and Russian historian Lev Nikolayevich Gumilyov (1912–1992) was born in St. Petersburg to the celebrated poets Nikolai Gumilyov and Anna Akhmatova. He grew up with his grandmother, Anna Gumilyova, on the family estate near Tver. He moved with her to Bezhetsk when they were forced to abandon the estate in 1917. In 1918, Lev's parents divorced, and three years later, his father was executed by the Bolsheviks. His background would become a frequent obstacle in Lev Nikolayevich's life. After finishing school, he attempted to enroll in a teacher training college, but was rejected due to his noble ancestry. Gumilyov then began working at a factory and later attended courses for collectors on geological expeditions. He set out on his first expedition in 1931. This trip left a lasting impression on him, and throughout his life he repeatedly participated in geological, archaeological, and ethnographic expeditions. In 1934, Gumilyov entered the history department at Leningrad University. He was in his fourth year when he was arrested on charges of anti-Soviet activity. This wasn't Gumilyov's first arrest, but it was followed by his first lengthy imprisonment: five years in a labor camp. When Lev Nikolayevich's sentence ended, the Great Patriotic War was in full swing. He volunteered for the front, participated in the liberation of Poland and the capture of Berlin, and received several military awards. Returning to Leningrad, Gumilyov graduated from the university as an external student and successfully defended his PhD dissertation in history. In 1949, Lev Nikolayevich joined the All-Union Geographical Society and was arrested again that same year on the same charges; this time, he was sentenced to ten years in a labor camp. However, even in prison, he did not abandon his studies: he pondered the content of his future doctoral dissertation. Gumilyov was fully rehabilitated in 1956. He worked for a time at the Hermitage, and in 1961, he received a doctorate in history. A year later, he was appointed senior research fellow at the Institute of Geography at Leningrad State University, a position he held until his retirement.
