Victor Hugo’s epic novel Les Miserables (1862) is a huge text without which it is impossible to imagine the spiritual history of the XIX century. In essence, this is the “war and peace” of the great French classic, only here is reflected not the confrontation of enemy armies, but the war waged between good and evil in the human soul and in society. In the creation of Les Misérables, the author, according to him, was primarily concerned with three themes: “the oppression of a man ... the fall of a woman due to hunger, the wilting of a child due to the darkness of ignorance”, which was reflected in the stories of the main characters: convict Jean Valjean, Fantine and Cosette. Fantasticly twisted adventurous plot makes you follow with inseparable attention the events that unfold on the streets of old Paris, in the slums and barricades. It is no coincidence that in the XX century there are dozens of adaptations of Les Miserables - from the silent film On the Barricades (1907) to the last film by Tom Hooper.
