The artist Alexander Nikolayevich Volkov-Muromtsev (St. Petersburg, 1844-Venice, 1928), who was educated as an agronomist and received a professorship in Odessa, left his career as a scientist in his homeland and went to Italy, where he became famous as an excellent watercolorist, the author, first of all, of Venetian landscapes. On the wave of European success, he acquired a palace in Venice on the Grand Canal, which received his name - Palazzo Volkoff, in which he lived for half a century. His aristocratic background and talents allowed him to enter the cosmopolitan Venetian bohomondom, he was close to Wagner and Liszt; as a guide he received members of the House of Romanoff. For many years he had a secret romantic relationship with the actress Eleonora Duse. His memoirs were published after his death, translated into English, the original manuscript having been lost and the reader is now offered a back translation.
