In the spring of 1936, the Holy Land erupted in an uprising against the local Jewish community and the British Mandate authorities. Uniting feuding families, city dwellers and villagers, rich and poor, it became a crucible forging Palestinian identity, but ultimately turned against the rebels themselves. It was then that the Palestinians came closest to victory; but they never recovered from defeat. And it was then that Zionist leaders began to lose their illusions about Arab pliability and faced a troubling prospect: realizing their dream of an independent state meant, perhaps, a perpetual reliance on force of arms. The legacy of this rebellion lives on today: it not only casts a shadow over the eight decades of Arab-Israeli conflict—for Israelis and Palestinians, the uprising continues.
