1953. Kilian and his brother Jacobo leave their hometown of Huesca for the distant, unknown and exotic island of Fernando Po. There their father, the owner of the Sampaca plantation where some of the best cacao in the world is grown and roasted, is waiting for them. On these evergreen and warm shores, the brothers discover the life of a colony so different from dull and gray Spain; share the hard work on the plantation; learn the cultural differences and similarities between newcomers and natives; and discover friendship, passion, love, and hate. But one of the brothers crosses a forbidden line and falls hopelessly in love with a native woman. Their love and the complex relationship between settlers and islanders changes the brothers' relationship and the course of their lives, and becomes the source of a mystery that will affect even future generations. 2003. Clarence, Hakobo's daughter and Kilian's niece, wants to learn about her origins and plunges into the past where she discovers this mystery will finally be solved.
