The intriguing and full of secrets story "The Page Fleur de Me" about the adventures of noble noblemen, the prisoners of the Bastille and the conspiracy of Fouquet was first published in French in 1868. Its author, the writer Pierre Alexis de Ponson du Terrail, gained fame as a master of criminal adventure stories. The main historical actors of the story "The Page Fleur de Meux" may be familiar to Russian readers from Dumas's novel "The Vicomte de Bragelonne". In this edition, Ponson's story is published for the first time in full translation. The book is decorated with magnificent drawings by one of the most famous illustrators of the XIX century - Gustave Doré.
In the second half of the XIX century. all of Paris read adventure stories about the dexterous and elusive swindler Rocambole. Descriptions of his adventures were regularly printed in the capital's newspapers, and the public eagerly awaited the appearance of new chapters. In the history of literature Rocambole became the first "superhero"; he was the forerunner of Arsène Lupin, Fantomas and even Ostap Bender. This character was invented by French writer Pierre Alexis de Ponson du Terraille. He was born in the summer of 1829 in an old aristocratic family and was supposed to become a military man by the example of his grandfather. Pierre took up his pen after failing the entrance exams to the Naval Academy. Ponson du Terrail worked like mad - sat at his desk at five in the morning and stroichil, without bending his back, until the evening. As a result, for 20 years Ponson du Terraille composed two hundred stories, in which Rocambole was only one of hundreds of characters created by him. Of course, it wasn't just the quantity of writing. Ponson du Terraille had an innate gift of a talented writer. His novels were read by everyone from commoners to aristocrats. Read the story "The Page of Fleur de Meux", and you'll feel it yourself. This is literature of the level of "The Three Musketeers" Dumas. France appreciated the talent of Ponson du Terrail, making him a Knight of the Legion of Honor. It is a pity that the life of the writer was short. Ponson du Terraille died of smallpox in November 1870. He was only 42 years old.
