There are playwrights whose names embody theater in the highest sense, and among them is Henrik Johann Ibsen (1828-1906), a Norwegian playwright, a reformer of European theater, and the founder of the "new drama."

"Peer Gynt," one of Ibsen's most famous plays, was Ibsen's protest against romantic tendencies. Despite this, the play remained in the cultural consciousness as the embodiment of Norwegian romanticism, thanks to its scenes featuring Solveig and Edvard Grieg's music. In Russia, Ibsen was one of the "masterminds" of the early 20th century; his plays were staged at the Moscow Art Theater, and motifs from "Peer Gynt" resonated in the poetry of Alexander Blok. For Norwegians, "Peer Gynt" is as much a national work as Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin" is for Russians, and Goethe's "Faust" is for Germans.

A seamless blend of high realism, intense plots, and rich, captivating characters—these are the components that characterize Ibsen's artistic style as a playwright.
The collection includes four works: the dramatic poem "Peer Gynt," the play "A Doll's House," the family drama "Ghosts," and the play "Hedda Gabler."
