"Pirate Utopias: Moorish Corsairs and Renegade Europeans", a historical study by Peter Lamborn Wilson, known to anarchists everywhere as Hakim Bey. The book takes us to the 17th century, to North Africa, where the pirate republic of Salé briefly existed, a real "pirate utopia". Piracy for Wilson, like apostasy - the conversion of Europeans to Islam or various heresies - is a form of social resistance and anarchist flight from Christian-European civilization. Renegade pirates were a kind of vanguard of this resistance, and their pirate republic was a Temporary Autonomous Zone, a real island of freedom. This vanguard, - Wilson writes in conclusion, - "... failed, the renegades disappeared, and their nascent culture of resistance evaporated along with them. But their experience was not meaningless, and they do not deserve to be consigned to oblivion. Someone must honor their rebellious zeal and their "temporary autonomous zone" on the banks of the Bou Regreg River in Morocco. So let this book serve as a monument to them, and thus allow the renegades to reenter the restless dreams of civilization."
