Cuba. 1961. Fidel Castro announces a campaign to combat illiteracy. He promises that in just one year, volunteers will teach all the island's illiterate inhabitants to read and write. "There can be no strong state without a strong people. To become responsible citizens, people must be literate." But where can we find enough volunteer teachers for an entire (albeit small) state? They are schoolchildren and students, and most often - young girls and girls. Thirteen-year-old Laura is one of them. An excellent student who loves to read English novels and philosophical poems, she has never been outside the capital before. However, now, together with other young teachers, Laura is heading to the mountains. She will live with a peasant family, work in the fields, and face the dangers of wartime. Laura will teach and, of course, learn.
