"Pnin" (1957), the fourth English-language novel by Vladimir Nabokov, is devoted to the life vicissitudes of one of the most defenseless and touching characters in the literature of the XX century. Timofey Pnin, a true Russian intellectual, a fine scholar, but a man of odd and hapless character, who left Russia after the 1917 revolution, teaches Russian literature at an American university, where he becomes an accidental victim of intrigue and callousness of his colleagues. Will he this time manage to elude his cunning creator, who prepared him the fate of the sufferer, forced time after time to bear the blows of fate? "Pnin" saw the light soon after the scandalous "Lolita" and, having received rave reviews from readers and critics, served as a kind of antithesis to the popular perception of "immorality" and "callousness" Nabokov. This edition of the novel is accompanied by a preface, notes and a final essay by the translator. The orthography, punctuation and transliteration of the translator have been preserved.
