The novel "Under the Strong Angel" was written by Polish writer Jiří Pilch (1952-2020) while recovering from alcohol addiction. Reverend Andrzej Luther believed the novel had something unusual and seductive, despite Luther's dislike of literature that touched on the subject of alcohol consumption. Screenwriter Michal Komar wrote that it was the first novel in Polish literature with an autobiographical theme and a sympathetic protagonist. According to Agnieszka Nęcka, "Under the Strong Angel" is a confession by a contemporary writer addicted to writing, women, and alcohol. After writing fifteen books, Jiří Pilch died of Parkinson's disease at the age of 67.
