John Milton's poem "Paradise Lost"

The biblical epic poem "Paradise Lost" by the great 17th-century English poet John Milton was long viewed in our country as a hymn to Satan's revolutionary love of freedom, rebelling against God's tyranny. This is understandable only from an ideological perspective, when first the 19th-century raznochintsy (commoners of the raznochintsy), then Soviet scholars, used this work for their own purposes, ignoring the overall message of the author—a deeply religious man preparing for ordination to the priesthood and possessing a brilliant theological education—nor the obvious inconsistencies: the good and loving God was not a tyrant at all, and the "revolutionary" Satan is portrayed as a true villain, reveling in the bitterness of his defeat. In this book, the poem is subjected to theological analysis for the first time, demonstrating which ancient holy scriptures were used to illustrate the poem. Milton drew on the Fathers, preferring in certain cases either Eastern or Western traditions, and skillfully melding Christian theology and classical motifs. Given that Milton was an active participant in the Great English Revolution and approved of the execution of King Charles I, believing that the people, by God's will, have the right to depose a tyrant, the monograph devotes special attention to examining the religious factor in the Great English Revolution and the king's pro-Catholic activities, which led to an unprecedented social upheaval, a contemporary of which Milton himself was a witness.
