Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote the now famous story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1886. By that time he was already the author of "Treasure Island" - a novel that brought him world fame. The new masterpiece of the writer became a vivid example of the genre of emerging science fiction. The success of this story was incredible - it was printed at once in both the Old and the New World. No less interesting and other works by Stevenson, included in this collection: "Suicide Club", "The Rajah's Diamond", "The Misadventures of John Nicholson". Stevenson's first literary experiments were travel notes, which he began to write, having received a law degree. Truly Stevenson's talent was revealed when he sat down for adventure novels. Their adventurous plots, a deep knowledge of the history of England and his native Scotland in conjunction with a fine psychological study of characters made these works fascinating reading. However, the fate of Stevenson could have turned out differently. The father of the future writer was an engineer. He wanted his son to become a specialist in the design of lighthouses, and Robert began to receive engineering education at the University of Edinburgh. In 1871, when the young man was only 21 years old, he even won a silver medal for developing a new design for a lighthouse flashing light. Around the same time, however, Robert fell in love with a pretty cabaret singer and wanted to marry her. His father was adamantly opposed. This spat forced Robert to quit engineering, acquire a law degree and take up the pen. Stevenson from childhood was not distinguished by good health. Doctors suspected that he had pulmonary tuberculosis. In search of a more suitable climate for himself, the already famous writer on a yacht purchased by him made a long sea cruise with his family on the seas of Southeast Asia and eventually settled on Upolu - one of the islands of Samoa. There, in his wooden house, on December 3, 1894, at the age of only 44, he died suddenly of a stroke. This collection of the writer's novels is adorned with evocative drawings by several British artists. Among them are the famous British illustrator of the late XIX - early XX century Edmund Joseph Sullivan, the famous American artist who received the Pulitzer Prize for his work in the early XX century, Charles Macauley, as well as an honorary member of the American Society of Painters and Watercolorists William Hennessy. Of particular note are the Art Nouveau illustrations of Stevenson's short parable tales. They were made by E.R. Herman in 1914 for an edition of only 105 copies.
