Romain Gary (1914–1980) was a celebrated French classic writer with Russian roots. His real name was Roman Katzev, and his pseudonym, Gary, comes from the Russian verb "to burn." Under his other pseudonym, Émile Ajar, he became the only person in history to win a second Prix Goncourt.

"The Guilty Head" is a novel by a hoaxer about a hoaxer. A handsome young ragamuffin, without family or tribe, lives in a hut in Tahiti with a beautiful Tahitian woman, passing himself off as an artist and then as a leper, extorting money from wealthy tourists. His true identity is shrouded in mystery. Everyone is left wondering why, in an attempt to break with civilization and escape his own self, he fled to this island, which he cleverly managed to levy a "Gauguin tax."
