This manual is based on our "Yachtsman's Dictionary," published in 1999. The material has been significantly revised and expanded, and numerous errors that crept into the previous edition have been corrected. In its new form, the book combines the functions of a dictionary and a textbook. Each topic is presented with 20-30 key terms. Examples of these terms follow.
Each example is taken from original sources and not only illustrates the term's application but also contains interesting and useful information. Most chapters are supplemented with "boxes"—insert texts. The reader is encouraged to translate these texts independently.
The entire material is divided thematically into five parts.
The first and second parts provide general information on the organization of global sailing, meteorology, and yacht design and rigging. Meanwhile, the "Meteorology" section has been expanded to include terms used to describe the tactical situation during a race. This set of terms is published in Russian for the first time. Also new is the "Team" and "Crew" section, which details the roles and responsibilities of sailors aboard a racing yacht.
The third part of the book (Chapters 7–11) is devoted to various aspects of competition preparation. Most of the terms and expressions presented here have not been published in Russian or are provided in outdated forms. This applies to the topic of "Control Techniques," including the verbal communication patterns of crew members onboard a yacht, as well as to the topics of "Tactics" and "Sports Training" in sailing.
Parts four and five are devoted to sailing racing itself and judging.
Chapter 18 offers terms on a number of practically useful topics.
Alphabetical English-Russian and Russian-English dictionaries are included in a separate section. Several appendices containing useful information are also included here.
