This monograph by Doctor of Theology and Professor at St. Tikhon's Orthodox University, Priest Alexander Mazyrin, is devoted to the history of the relations between the Soviet pseudo-church Renovationist organization and the Patriarchate of Constantinople and other Local Churches. The book reveals the fundamental changes in the situation of the Orthodox Churches as a result of the military-revolutionary upheavals of the late 1910s and early 1920s. Considerable attention is paid to the nature of the Renovationist schism that arose in 1922 by decision of the Bolshevik leadership, in both its socio-political and ecclesiological aspects. The reasons for the Phanar's (Constantinople Patriarchate's) favoritism toward the Soviet Renovationists are determined. The nature of the Renovationist organization's relations with other Local Churches (Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, Georgia, and others) is established. The view of the Russian Orthodox Church (from its Primates to its rank-and-file members) on the Renovationists and their international activities is revealed. The narrative reaches the time of the liquidation of the Renovationist schism in the mid-1940s.
