This publication is based on a course of lectures on the history of the Universal Orthodox Church, delivered by the author at three higher education institutions—initially to students of the Church Journalism group at the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University, then at the Russian Orthodox University, and currently at St. Tikhon's Orthodox University for the Humanities.

In Book 1, the author takes readers from the era of the apostles, martyrs, and theologian-hierarchs to the establishment of Christianity as the state religion under Emperor Constantine.

In Book 2, the author touches on the period of the Ecumenical Councils, during which the Church's dogmatic theology was formed. Readers will encounter both defenders of Orthodoxy (hierarchs, orthodox emperors, and saints) and heresiarchs, who later became the founders of the non-Chalcedonian Churches.

Book III describes the fateful events of the post-iconoclastic period in the history of the Universal Church: the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius to enlighten the Slavs, the baptism of Kievan Rus', the division of the Eastern and Western Churches, the Crusades, the brief rise and flourishing of the Byzantine Empire, and its conquest by the Turks. Of particular interest is the epilogue, which examines topics still poorly explored in church history literature (the Church and the power of the infidels, the Church and heterodoxy, the Church and nationalism in the Balkans, the Church and the new nation-states).

The publication is equipped with scholarly support (indexes, chronological lists), as well as conceptually well-thought-out maps designed to facilitate understanding of the material presented.
