Overcoming Resistance in Cognitive Therapy

This book presents a multidimensional model of resistance proposed by Robert Leahy, a leader in contemporary cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. It is richly illustrated with case examples and session vignettes and examines the various ways in which clients may resist core therapeutic procedures: agenda noncompliance and homework, sharing transference with other therapists, inappropriate behavior, and premature termination. The underlying processes of resistance are explored, from the desire for validation to risk aversion and self-limitation. Also highlighted are the ways in which the therapist's own reactions may inadvertently inhibit change. Innovative tools for getting treatment back on track are provided, including targeted interventions, in-session "experiments," and questionnaires and graphic models to share with clients.
