Both readers and literary scholars agree that the protagonist of the novel "The Crime of Sylvestre Bonard" is based on the author himself. The elderly historian and philologist Sylvestre Bonard lives in a world of old manuscripts and books and has trouble getting along with people. However, when he meets the granddaughter of the woman he once loved, old feelings are rekindled within Bonard. Upon learning that the girl's guardian is cruelly treating her, Sylvestre decides to kidnap Jeanne Alexandre from her family home...

The novel "The Gods Are Thirsty" is set during the height of the French Revolution. The young idealist Évariste Gamelin ardently embraces the ideals of Danton, Robespierre, and Marat. When offered a seat on the jury of a revolutionary tribunal, Évariste zealously takes up the fight against the enemies of the republic, dispatching aristocrats and financiers, porters, and servants alike to the scaffold. After all, when the flywheel of terror is set in motion, the gods are eternally thirsty for new blood, and the guillotine cannot stand idle for a single day.
