William Henry Hudson (1841–1922) was an English writer and naturalist born into a family of immigrants and who spent the first half of his life in Argentina. He wrote more than twenty books, both fiction and popular science, but always inspired by nature and his observations of it. The protection of birds was the main cause of Hudson’s life. He was an energetic field researcher, a tireless ornithologist and a passionate fighter against the consumerist attitude towards the environment, who understood as a child that animal cages are miniature torture chambers. The book “Adventures among Birds” is a sentimental, ironic, seasoned with signature British humour and very poetic observations of birds against the backdrop of picturesque English landscapes. Reflecting on birds and human nature, Hudson turns to literature, music, anthropology and geography, and also calls on birders, hunters and collectors to be responsible.
