The present edition presents all the surviving works of St. Irenaeus of Lyons (c. 130?202) - "Refutation and Refutation of False Knowledge" in five books (following the example of the "father of church history" Eusebius and Blessed Jerome, usually called "Against Heresies" for short) and "Proof of Apostolic Preaching". St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, the spiritual pupil of St. Polycarp of Smyrna, the disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian, still preserved in his mouth the living apostolic voice and the spirit of apostolic teaching and Tradition. He enjoyed wide popularity and great respect of the entire Universal Church, was a peacemaker in the dispute between Rome and the Asia Minor Churches over ritual differences, but especially famous for his struggle against the most dangerous heretics of that time - the Gnostics. Zealously refuting all the Gnostic false doctrines that existed at that time, St. Irenaeus expounds with amazing clarity and depth the apostolic doctrine of God, salvation, redemption and resurrection of man, the Eucharist and the final destinies of the universe. In his person we see the most vivid defender of the idea of the Church, its importance and the necessity to belong to it. The exegetical side of St. Irenaeus' writings is very valuable, and in this edition special attention has been paid to it - references to the Holy Scriptures have been clarified and supplemented, and an index of biblical quotations from St. Irenaeus' writings has been compiled. The previous Russian translation by Archpriest P. Preobrazhensky is given in the new Russian translation. The Russian translation by Archpriest P. Preobrazhensky is given in a new edition and provided, where necessary, with textual notes. For all those interested in the history of the ancient Church and the formation of Orthodox dogmatics.
