Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) was a British writer, author of 28 action novels and adventure stories, and screenwriter. His name is widely known to readers worldwide. MacLean's books have sold over 150 million copies, and 18 films have been based on his novels, screenplays, and plots. In 1983, the University of Glasgow awarded him a Doctor of Literature degree.

From 1941 to 1946, MacLean served in the navy, participating in military operations and the Arctic convoys, which provided him with a wealth of material for his work and determined the themes of his best books.
