Syria has held a special place in the Middle East for centuries. It is sometimes called the second cradle of the "eternal kingdom" because of its special role in the early Christian era. Here began the ascetic paths of many saints, the first Christian churches were created, and many monasteries were sanctified by spiritual asceticism. And despite the fact that the majority of the population now professes Islam, there is a huge Orthodox heritage, the ruins of ancient "dead cities", brought over the centuries by the heat of the desert sands, early churches and, of course, shrines, which were the glory of the entire East and still give a vivid idea of the majestic Christian culture that once dominated this region. The Orthodox history of Syria and the monuments of its antiquity after years of devastating civil war will be the main focus of our story. We will also follow the pilgrimage routes of Lebanon, whose canonical territory, like Syria, is under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Antioch, and for most of history these states were once a single entity.
