The history of literary development is a far more extensive concept than one might suppose, and far more complex than a first-year student of philology can imagine. Invariably, every selection of "best books" and "must-read" writers is accompanied by a merciless cutting off of the pearls of thought from the approved norm and the "gold standard". Many geniuses, recognized and unrecognized, and masterpieces of world literature are left out.
The World Classics Books series is an attempt to expand the established notion of classic books and authors obligatory for an educated person by offering the reader works that he or she has either not heard of at all or is familiar with from very far away. However, the works presented in the series are, in a way, milestones on the complex path of the development of world literature, without which it is difficult to get an idea of various genres, literary schools and entire epochs of world culture.
