Ribby was published in 1964 and was the final book in the Henry Huggins series. After the success of this series, American writer Beverly Cleary wrote more than two dozen books, becoming, in the words of her young readers, “a real living classic.”
Ribsi was the most common city dog, of those who are called mutts. Even strangers at first sight knew what a nice, friendly dog he was. He liked to run after the postman, to meet the milkman, but most of all he liked to accompany his master, Henry Huggins, everywhere. Ribsey would have been quite happy with life without fleas. Especially bothered him one, the most greedy and hungry flea, which gnawed him under the collar, where he could not reach. That flea made it happen.
In the first of seven stories of the collection, Ribsy is tied for Henry to the shopping center, where the Huggins go in a brand new station wagon car. Seeing that Ribsey can't reach the itchy spot on the nape, Henry removes the collar with the registration number. The Huggins go shopping and leave Ribsey waiting for them in the car. He accidentally presses the window button and jumps out of the window. The dog runs through the parking lot for a long time in the hope of finding traces of Henry and eventually climbs into the "wagon", where the window is open and smells like new rubber from the Huggins. It smells the same, but the people sitting there are the wrong ones - a family with a bunch of kids. Four sisters and a little brother persuade their parents to take a cute dog with them without a collar. Ribsey is horrified to know he is being taken out of town. So begins Ribsey’s adventures and his long journey home.
