Catherine's Golden Age was marked by the strengthening and expansion of Russian borders. Europe was already too small for the great empress; she turned her gaze beyond the southern seas, reluctantly listening to reports about the vast and unexplored eastern lands. Siberian merchant Grigory Shelikhov equipped a small flotilla for the development of Alaska, since he sincerely believed that "this business could prove most useful for the empire." Difficult sea passages, harsh wintering, and clashes with the local population were not the hardest tests on the way to the great goal. It was much more difficult to maneuver among the icebergs of political intrigue, bypassing the endless offices of officials and Catherine's confidants. The fate of the North-Eastern Company would have remained unenviable if not for a lucky chance and Shelikhov's determination to reach the end of the chosen path.
