Boris Shergin (1893–1973) was an outstanding Russian storyteller, folklorist, and artist, the "Arkhangelsk Bazhov," a remarkable master of language, a living embodiment of the folklore of the Russian North. Considering himself primarily a "storyteller," Shergin became famous for his adaptations of ancient fairy tales and bylinas, uniquely poetic stories about the Pomors and northern seafarers, about "sea service," and the harsh northern beauty. With unrivaled precision and love, Shergin recreates the atmosphere, everyday life, and dialectal nuances of his native land.
The artist's creative range, reflected in its full scope in "Northern Heart," is also striking: from the solemn and mournful "old times" to the rich language of grotesque adventure and the subtle psychology of "old bourgeois" romanticism. Even those who haven't yet read these tales and fables, stories about elegant craftsmen, sovereign helmsmen, robber sons, and a fox confessor, are likely familiar from childhood with the animated films "Gilded Foreheads" and "The Magic Ring," "Vanya Dansky," "About Yersh Yershovich," and many others, based on Shergin's tales, voiced by actors such as Oleg Tabakov and Yevgeny Leonov, Leonid Kuravlyov and Lev Durov, and set to music by composers such as Eduard Artemyev, Vladimir Martynov, and Vladimir Dashkevich.
As masterfully as he mastered words, Shergin also masterfully wielded his brush, skillfully combining the techniques of northern modernism with the folk motifs of Pomorye. "Northern Heart" includes a representative selection of his illustrations, graphics, and sketches.
