Honoré de Balzac was a great French writer, from whom, as Leo Tolstoy put it, "everyone learned to write in his day." In the numerous novels of his "Human Comedy" (subtitled "Etudes in Morals"), he created a colorful, cruel, and multifaceted world, reflecting the lives of all classes of contemporary society.

This edition includes novellas and short stories about love, which Balzac himself defined as "scenes of private life": "The Country Ball," "The Family of the Second Family," "Conjugal Consent," and "The Silhouette of a Woman," as well as the brilliant novella "The Illustrious Gaudissart," about the adventures of a cunning Parisian traveling salesman who, "sated with the vices of Paris, manages to don the guise of provincial simplicity."
