Louis-Ferdinand Céline is a classic of 20th-century literature, a writer with a tragic fate, renowned as a misanthrope, anarchist, cynic, and extreme individualist. Accused of collaborating with the German occupation authorities during World War II, Céline was forced to flee to Germany and then to Denmark, where he spent several post-war years: first in prison, then in exile. One of his most shocking books is Death on Credit (1936). In it, the writer, without mincing words, harshly and heartbreakingly described all the ugliness of life on the Parisian underworld that he observed in his youth. Reading about the militant amorality, you will feel the vileness of the surrounding environment with its hopeless despair and lies. However, the novel evokes mixed emotions. On the one hand, images of absurdity and injustice evoke feelings of indignation and protest. On the other, the author's almost masochistic delight in chaos is astonishing. But this is precisely Céline, whose works continue to provoke fierce debate and a divergence of opinions.
