"Many, looking at this brief description of Elena's life, will probably conclude that she was unhappy: without a husband or child, an eternal daughter, walled up in her mother's tiny two-room apartment, where the kitchen wall was overgrown with black mold. But what was it really like, what did she want, and how did she feel?" After the funeral of her Russian language and literature teacher, the heroine takes her archive. Shocked by Elena's death, she tries to unravel the life of this woman, so close to family and yet so unfamiliar, to understand the nature of their deep connection and the pain she carried within. The heroine retypes diary entries, letters, and documents that once belonged to the teacher, tends to the garden, and walks the dogs, reflecting on the earth, time, and death. Transforming the process of grief into a meditative text, the narrator fails to understand Elena, but her disappointment is replaced by a realization: the stories of a growing girl and an aging woman, who once met in Grodno in the 2000s, are now linked forever.

Daria Traiden is a writer, author of the Belarusian-language collection of short stories "Kryshtalnaya Noch" (2018) and the novella "Mushroom Places" (2024).
