Solzhenitsyn's book "A Grain Caught Between Two Millstones" (29th volume of the Collected Works) is a continuation of his first memoir prose "A Calf Fought an Oak Tree" (28th volume). During the years of exile (1974-1994), the writer had to confront both the communist system and the worst components of Western civilization - a perverted understanding of freedom, democracy, human rights and duties, due to the departure of a significant part of society from spiritual values. But two "millstones" did not grind the "grain". The artist remained an artist, and therefore the sketches of exile turned out to be sketches of literary life, both in a bitterly ironic sense and in a direct and high sense: the history of the creation of "The Red Wheel" is revealed to us. Literature here is inseparable from life, and hardships are inseparable from the joyful acceptance of the world. That is why the sketches describe in detail a happy family life, that is why it is said with equal force "on the other side and the spring is not red" and - with admiration! - "how diverse is the Earth", that is why portraits are so important - close friends and charming people, only once met, but caused unforgettable affection. The palette of the book is rarely multi-colored, but literally every episode is illuminated by Solzhenitsyn's main passion - love for Russia, anxiety about its fate.
